DISABILITY ETIQUETTES 

Etiquettes of disable people's



People with disabilities are the people with individual abilities, interests and needs. They may sometimes look, act a or move differently but they too have similar goals like other individual. Every person deserves equal treatment and opportunities irrespective of their sex, religion, age, race or ability. Disability etiquettes are the basic etiquettes for working with people having different kinds of disabilities. It is important to understand that disability is not by choice  but by chance.  

1 Wheelchair etiquette  

(i) While talking with such a person, always be in front of him/her and maintain eye contact. 

(ii) It is inappropriate to automatically assist the individual without his/her Permission. If your assistance is rejected, respect their decision. 

(iii) If the conversation with a wheelchair user lasts longer, either kneel down or sit down at a nearby place to give the individual a more comfortable viewing angle. 

(iv) Most importantly, respect the wheelchair. Always believe that wheelchair too can be a means to fully engage in physical activity throughout the life. 

2. Visual disability etiquette 

(i) People with visual disability are not able to see gestures hence, we need to say everything in words. . 

(iii) Always introduce yourself and the people accompanying you before starting a conversation with such people. 

(iv) While walking with a person having visual disability,offer your arm to them for holding Guide the person about the curves, ditches, potholes or steps along the way. 

(v) Always inform them before ending a conversation or leaving the room. Do not walk away without informing. 

3. Hearing disability etiquette 

(i) While communicating with a person having hearing disability make supe is no background noise. 

(ii) Wave your hand or tap on thar shoulder to grab their attention 

(iii) Do not shout at a person having hearing disability 

(iv) While using the help of an interpreter to communicate with such a person always direct your remarks to them instead of the interpreter. 

(v) Talk slowly and clearly so that they can read your lip movements or gesture or facial expression for understanding conversations 

(vi) Use sign language only if both of you are familiar with it. 

4. Learning disability etiquettes 

(i) Always speak slowly and politely with a person having learning disability 

(ii) Do not use complex words or sentences.

(iii) Listen carefully to what they want to convey and try to understand their point of view. 

5. Speech disability etiquettes 

(i) Be very attentive and patient while conversing with a person having speed impairment. Do not rush him/her. 

(ii) Always allow them to complete the sentence instead of completing it for them. 

(iii) Convey the points you do not understand and allow them to respond free Do not pretend to understand if you haven't. 

(iv) Always encourage such people rather than correcting them. 

 

ADVANTAGE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN NEEDS 

Children with special needs should be given an opportunity to participate in yoga, swimming, gymnastic and other age appropriate games and sports. This is beneficial physical and mental development. have proved that physical activities for children with special needs their physical fitness but also encourage them to lead en help them to effectively fight negative emotions like loneliness, stress, anger etc. We will discuss about some advantages of physical activities for children with special needs. 

1. Development of social skills: Normally it has been observed that children with special needs find it difficult to socialise with others. Their physical or mental disability often becomes a hindrance in it. They have low self-confidence and face difficulties in expressing their view and understanding the social skills. Participating in physical activities provides these children an opportunity to develop social skills. This increases their self-confidence and differently-abled could makes them feel that they are an important part of the society. 

2. Improvement in concentration: Children with intellectual or cognitive disabilities find it difficult to concentrate. They generally exhibit stereotypical behaviour. For example, such children are often seen performing an activity repeatedly. Since physical activities and sports are played as per the stated rules and regulations, this gradually improves their level of concentration. 

3. Improvement in physical health: Researches have proved that participation of children with special needs in physical activities and sports improve their physical health. Active participation in such activities helps to improve their hand-eye coordination, increases flexibility, strengthens the muscles, enhances tolerance levels, etc. 

4. Improvement in mental health: Physical activities play an important role in improving mental health. For people suffering from tension, stress depression, etc. physical activities are a good way of recreation. Further, it increases the self confidence, social awareness and self-respect. 

5. Improvement in Behaviour: Physical activities and sports also contribute to the cognitive development of the children with special needs. It not only makes them disciplined but also inculcates a sense of goal orientation and decision making. 

Interaction with fellow members of the team helps them achieve their targets. All these have a positive impact on such children and they develop problem solving skills. 

Thus, we can see that physical activities are important for children with special needs. It improves their motor skills, keeps obesity under control, improves self confidence and enhances social development. 


STRATEGIES TO MAKE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES ACCESS FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS 

Certain strategies have been developed to make physical activities accessible for with special needs. These strategies are adopted according to the interests and of such children. These programs are known as adaptive physical education objective of such programs is to ensure the active participation of children with needs in physical activities and sports. 

The following strategies should be adopted to make physical activities accessible for children with special needs.  

1. Consideration of individual needs: The  needs and capabilities of every child must be assessed to ensure that the adaptive  programme meets the physical, mental, social and emotional needs of all the children.

2. Modification of equipment: The size, shape, weight and colour of the equipment used can be altered to suit the needs of the children. For example, use of bright coloured balls for children with visual impairment. 

3. Change of environment: The environment should also be modified according to the needs of such children. For example, the playing area can be reduced or marked with tape when the movement capabilities of children are limited. Besides for creating a good atmosphere, facilities such as music, bright lights etc. may be made available. 

4. Modification in rules: Rules should be modified according to the skills and capabilities of the participants in order to encourage fair competition. The rules should always be easy to understand. Gradually, with improvement in skills of the participants, the miles should be modified. While framing the rules of any game, the past achievements of the children with special needs should also be considered. 

5. Modification in guidelines and strategies: The instructions given to children with special needs should be very clear and easy to understand. Instructions can either be oral or written. Explaining strategies or guidelines with the help of pictures helps them to understand the rules in a better way. 

5. Training of educators: The educators engaged in adaptive physical education programs must be well trained to be able to modify the activities according to the adaptability of the children with special needs. Training load should be increased gradually to improve the endurance and strength of the muscles of such children. 

6. Supervision by medical staff: The activities under adaptive physical educate programs must always be performed under the supervision of a medical Appropriate safety measures must be available as per the needs of the children. They are also advised to undergo physiotherapy and occupational therapy the guidance of medical experts. 


Health and Safety of Children with Spacial Needs 

The health and safety of children with special needs is very important for the success of the training program designed for them. The following measures can be adopted: 

1. Children with special needs participating in physical activities should drink plenty of water before, during and post activities. The amount of water intakes depends oh weather conditions and duration of activity. 

2. Safety equipment like helmet, knee guard and elbow guard should used if needed.  

3. Climatic conditions should be kept in mind while planning a workout session for children with special needs. 

4. Extra cure must be taken while doing weight training and stretching exercises. 

5. There should be proper warm-up sessions before starting the activity. Warmup should include general as well as special exercises. During of warmup should be according to weather conditions. 

6 Cooling down of limbering down alter the activity is also equally important for such children.
