MEANING, OBJECTIVES AND SAFETY MEASURES DURING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND ADVENTURE SPORTS

Adventure sports a which are also known as 'Extreme Sports’ or ‘Actio Sports’ are performed in an environment involving great physical risks. Such sports involve activities that have a high level of inherent danger. Distinctive features of such sports are speed, height and the spectacular stunts that the participants perform. Such sports also involve high levels of physical exertion. However these Sports are an extraordinary human experience and therefore people who love to face such extreme or demanding physical and psychological challenges come forward to participate in such sports.
Adventure sports differ from traditional games and sports because of higher number of uncontrollable variables. The uncontrolled conditions may be related to wind, snow, water, mountains, etc. For such reasons, participation in adventure sports is rarely allowed in schools. Some adventure sports are as follows:

Objectives of Adventure Sports
Some main objectives of adventure sports are as follows
1. To satisfy the strong desire for adventure: Desire for adventure is inherent among all human beings. To satisfy that desire, we take part in adventure sports and compete with nature. Adventure sports can be defined as activities that have high level of inherent danger.
2. To do something unique and daring in the field of sports: During adventure sports we come across many challenges, some of them may be life threatening However, we experience unlimited thrill in overcoming those challenges.
3. To indulge in an activity which is exciting and satisfying: There ta high level of excitement involved in adventure sports. There is always Satisfaction after accomplishment of a task.
4. To accept the challenges posed by the nature: Adventure sports an performed in an environment involving great physical risks By participating wm adventure sports, we accept the challenges of the natural and natura Surroundings.
5. To test ones strength and other capabilities in difficult and dangerous situation: Outdoor activities present the best platform for participants to assess their capabilities and limitations in dangerous situations.
6. To face and deal effectively with challenging situations: Adventure Sports are used to classify certain activities that feature high level of risk and danger. These activities often involve very high speed, high altitude or high level of physical exertion. Exposure to such situations help an individual to deal effectively with challenging situations.
7. To experience a sense of achievement: For excursion during summer, adventure sports athletes indulge in mountain biking and rock climbing. After successful completion, the athletes experience a sense of achievement.
8. To satisfy one’s self esteem: Self-esteem is the mental image we create of what we think we are. Achieving small goals improves self-esteem. Hence, participation in adventure sports boosts one’s self-esteem.
9. To indulge in activities for recreation and healthy channelisation of energy: Adventure sports are good stress busters. They are an effective means for recreation. During adventure sports, adventurers climb mountains or dive into the roaring sea. Such activities lead to healthy channelisation of energy.
10. To promote the spirit of risk taking and team work: Although the definition of ‘adventure sport’ explains the general characteristics of the activity, it is clear that adventure sports are full of danger and thrill. This inculcates a spirit of risk taking and team work among the adventurers.
11. To serve as a training ground for future leaders in Physical Education: We need to make our future generation rough and tough Adventure sports provide an opportunity for adventurers to promote their physical and mental fitness. Leaders in physical education need to be physically, mentally, socially and emotionally fit.
SAFETY MEASURES DURING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND ADVENTURE SPORTS
Physical activities and adventure sports always carry the risk of injury, either mild or serious. Some safety measures have been listed below, which one should follow while undertaking such activities
1. Use proper gears and equipment: Put on appropriate gears such as gloves, helmets, hiking shoes, etc. depending on the type of activity and use proper and high quality equipment for example, while rock climbing always wear a helmet and appropriate shoes to avoid injuries.
2. Avoid exertion: Take timely breaks during physical activities and neve, overexert your body as it may cause injures such as tor ligaments,Sprains, shin splints, etc. It is also advised not to exercise on an empty stomach or after having a heavy meal. A small meal such as a bowl of cereal, oatmeal or a sandwich should be consumed one or two hour, before the physical activity.
3. Warm up: Always do warm-up exercises to increase the body strength and lower the risk of sprains. It is also important to cool down the body after a rigorous activity as it brings the heart rate and breathing back to normal.
4. Observation of the weather condition: Plan your activity after taking note of the weather condition. One should not do outdoor vigorous exercise during hot and humid weather. Activities like river rafting, surfing, and Paragliding should be avoided during storms.
5. Keep hydrated: Drink fluids and keep the body hydrated, especially during prolonged physical activity or adventure sports like trekking or hiking. It helps in preventing heatstroke and heat cramps. Tea or coffee should be avoided as they cause dehydration.
6. Take note of your health: If you have specific health conditions, plan your activity after consulting with your doctor. In case of shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, body pain, etc. you should stop the activity and immediately consult a doctor.
7. Seek expert guidance: Adventure sports like surfing, paragliding, rock climbing, river rafting, etc. should be performed under expert guidance. Make sure that your trainer is certified.
