Physical Education and Sports for CWSN (Children with Special Need-Divyang) 

Disability & Disorders



Every individual has a unique set of abilities. Everyone has the potential to have a positive impact on this world. However, some people undertake their tasks a little differently than the rest. This difference should not be counted as an inability rather it should be treated as an ability that renders them unique. Some of the greatest contributions to this world have been made by such differently-abled people. They simply put in a little creativity, resourcefulness and a lot of hard work and determination to overcome the obstacles of their life. Such people are an inspiration for the society and deserve equal opportunities in all walks of life. 


CONCEPT OF DISABILITY AND DISORDER 

Disability 

You might have seen people who are visually impaired, unable to hear or have spinal injuries, these are all disabilities and they impact the activities of daily life such as ‘mobility, communication, etc. Disability is the physical or mental impairment that affects am individual's day-to-day activities. 

According to health Organization, there are three dimensions of disability 

1. Impairment to the physical and psychological functioning or to the body structure of a person. For example loss of vision, memory or a limb. 

2. Activity limitation such as difficulty in seeing, hearing, moving, walking, talking, etc. 

3, Participation restriction in normal day to-day activities. On the basis of the above mentioned dimensions we can say that, disability limits the activities. capabilities and development. It is a medical condition which does not let an individual lead a normal life. 

Definition 

According to Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, “Disability is an incapacity or lack of the ability to function normally” 

According to the US Federal Government, “Disability is defined as inability to engage to ary substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to last or has lasted for a continuous period of not less than 12 months’ 

Disability may be physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive or sensory. It may be present Since birth or acquired during the lifetime of the person. Generally, a disability cannot be cured. However, we must remember that differently-abled people are not less thar any other person. In fact, there are many examples of differently-abled people who have achieved great success and name. Some of them are Stephen Hawking, Jon Nash. Helen Keller and Sudha Chandran. 

Meaning 

Disability is an impairment which affects activities, capabilities and growth of an individual. 

Causes 

Main cause of disability is the weakness of any organ or body in the functioning of organ or body part which hinders normal functioning of that body part.

Occurrence 

It may be by birth or may develop after birth.

Affected body part 

Disability is related to body part. 

Treatment 

Treatment of disability is not possible. It is difficult to bring a person with disability back to the back to normal state.


Disorder 

Disorder may be defined as a disturbance in the normal functioning of an individual. It is an ailment that disturbs the health and well-being of an individual. It affects a person’s mental and physical state, thereby hampering his/her performance and efficiency. 

Definition 

According to Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, “Disorder is a derangement or abnormality of function’.

A disorder may be caused due to biological factors, environmental factors, germ factors, complications at birth, improper prenatal care, etc. It may be inherited by children from their parents or occur as a result of an injury or improper development. Initially, the symptoms of a disorder may seem normal. However, they are clearly visible at later stage For example, feeling frustrated and annoyed, inability to express emotions frequent outbursts of anger and resentment, etc. Early diagnosis and treatment disorder is advisable. If left untreated for a long time, it may lead to a disability. 

Meaning

Disorder is an ailment which disturb the normal functioning of an organism. 

Causes

Main cause of disorder is short deviation in the functioning of organs. 

Occurrence

In the beginning symptoms of disorder may be normal but after some time the  symptoms are clearly visible. 

Affected body part 

Disorder is primarily related to brain or functioning of brain. 

Treatment

Disorder can be cured if diagnosed at possible an early stage. Such person can come person with disability back to the back to normal state. normal state, However, disorder is not treated on time, it may become a disability. 


TYPES OF DISABILITY

Disability may be divided into four types: 

Disability 

1. Physical Disability 

  • Musculoskeletal Disability 
  • Neuromuscular Disability 

2. Intellectual Disability 

3. Cognitive Disability 

4. Sensory Disability
